It is important to recognize the porosity of the eyelashes before any eyelash treatment. How porous the eyelashes are depends on the condition of the hair cuticle. The cuticle is elastic and can open and close. Depending on how open or closed the scales are, one speaks of different hair porosity types.

WHAT IS THE HAIR CUTICULA?

The hair cuticle, also called the outer cuticle, is the outer cortical layer of the hair and consists of overlapping cells that lie above the hair pulp. The 4-5 µm thick cuticle is responsible for protecting the hair from physical and chemical influences. The hair types are divided into low, normal and high porosity.

LOW POROUS

The hair is thick, smooth and shiny. The scales of the cuticle are close fitting in such hair.

• Hair is difficult to treat because any dye or chemical solution can penetrate it with great difficulty. With lash extensions, the wearing time is significantly reduced due to the smoothness.
• To change the condition, slightly more aggressive solutions are usually used and/or longer exposure times. Primers are often used for extensions. Otherwise the result will be very weak.

NORMAL POROUS

The cuticle layer is slightly open, so it can only absorb as much moisture as the hair allows.

• The hair is fairly easy to treat
• The standard exposure time is observed here. (The instructions mostly refer to this type of hair)

The cuticle is loose and the scales are open. The moisture cannot remain and it tries at every opportunity to absorb the moisture as well and as much as possible.

• This level of porosity can be both natural and a result of adverse effects on the hair.
• Such hair quickly absorbs the pigment, is easy to dye and quickly curls.
• To work with porous hair, you will need to use softer lotions. The exposure time of the lotions and dyes can be shortened.
